There are two constants in my life - photography and animals - be it wildlife or domestic pets. This is how it all began...
13 years ago when i was just a secondary school kid, I was reading the National Geographic magazine March 2000 in the school hall when images by Joel Sartore caught my eyes. I was captivated by the lush imagery of the Amazon forest and his skills and tenacity to photograph in such a challenging environment. This was stuck at the back of my mind for the next 6 years through my graduation (diploma in digital media design) and through my early working life.
Finally in 2006, I ventured into the wilderness of the Bornean jungle with my first DSLR ( a Nikon D70s ) that I've saved up for. I was travelling down the river at night and along the two sides of the riverbanks, trees were filled with thousands of fireflies. The night sky was filled with so many stars, which were all reflected on the dark river surface. I suddenly felt like i was surrounded by the Universe and at one with Nature. I've fallen in love with Nature & Wildlife photography.
Fast forward to 2011-2012, I had my photos published on two issues of National Geographic Explorer magazine. Won the Grand Prize of Nature's Best Photography Windsland Smith Rice International Award 2012 (I'm the first woman & Asian to win the grand prize) and had my winning work exhibitied at the prestigious Smithsonian Natural History Museum in USA. These are my mom's proudest moments of her only daughter.
However, my most rewarding moments have been when i can use photographey for greater good. Educating the younger generation about endangered species and wildlife conservation or just simply bringing them around the parks and gardens of Singapore to help them better appreciate the beauty of Nature through photography. Only when we love, will we care. Only when we care, will we help to make a positive difference.
Having travelled to many different countries and witnessed how human and wildlife conflicts have put a toll on many of the endangered species, I often wonder why is it that our natural affinity with animals have come down to this tragedy. Which is why the special bond with our domestic pets (some of us call them our man's best friends), is just very fascinating to me. In my photography, i've always focused on the bonds and emotions between the wildlife to tell a story. Now more than ever, i want to stretch my creativity and discover the love and bonds between humans and animals, starting with domestic pets. Maybe then we will discover how we can all live peacefully together with all living creatures on the only home we have, our Mother Earth.
It's been a great privilege to be able carve out my career path by combining my greatest loves - Photography, Animals, Travel and Design. I've always believed that anything is possible if you never give up your hopes and dreams. Never settle for a job that you don't truly love. Live life to it's fullest potential by doing what you love whole-heartedly and you will never have to work a single day of your life. That's has always been what my heart tells me and i always listen. The only life i want to live, is one that I'll never stop turning my dreams into a reality.
